The CCDET offers courses, through selected California community colleges, that provide an in-depth look at the ARB Heavy-Duty Vehicle Inspection Program (HDVIP) and the Periodic Smoke Inspection Program (PSIP), as well as Diesel Exhaust After-Treatment and Maintenance. See the CCDET class schedule for a list of current class availability.
HDVIP/PSIP Course:

Participants in the course receive:

  • Hands-on training on the correct administration of the SAE J1667 Snap Acceleration Smoke Test Procedures for Heavy-Duty Diesel Powered Vehicles which is required under both smoke inspection programs;
  • Basic smoke emissions troubleshooting and repair; and
  • Assurance that your technicians will be up-to-date on California s heavy-duty vehicle inspection programs.


Provides the skills to help you save money and do your part to help clean the air!

For a diesel repair facility that performs smoke testing, CCDET participation will assure your clients that your technician will correctly administer the snap-acceleration test. This can help prevent their vehicles from receiving citations.

For the fleet owner, CCDET training will assure you that your maintenance technicians will correctly administer the snap-acceleration test which will help you avoid costly penalties. You will also profit from increased fuel savings and get the maximum use from your vehicles due to proper maintenance.

To ensure quality testing per the specifications of the SAE J1667, the CARB strongly recommends opacity testing staff attend one of the CCDET college classes and obtain certification.

Diesel Exhaust After-Treatment and Maintenance Training Course:

Diesel exhaust after-treatment technology including wall-flow diesel particulate filters (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems are at the forefront of clean diesel technology.  CCDET’s Diesel Exhaust After-treatment Maintenance training covers the following:

  • background on why diesel particulate filters are necessary;
  • how the technology filters particulate matter (PM) and how regeneration strategies such as passive and active systems operate;
  • explores how filters might fail as well as preventative maintenance practices to avoid break downs;
  • an overview of SCR systems used on heavy-duty diesel engines.

In addition to these topics, the one day training also includes hands-on shop exercises designed to reinforce maintenance procedures employed to keep after-treatment technology and the engines they are installed on working at peak performance.
